Fishing In Phuket
PHUKET offers anglers the chance to fish year round, whether they
want to target billfish, or just concentrate catching smaller fish
on light tackle.
Normally sailfish stay around the local islands all year making it
a fish that can be caught on a day charter even in the monsoon season
(May-Sept) with June through till February the peak season.
On good day’s large numbers of sails can be seen jumping and
swimming around the islands of Racha
Yai and Koh Rok. Most sailfish are caught during the afternoon
giving anglers the chance to fish for other species in the morning.
Black Marlin (Aug-April) can be found just about anywhref
thref are Tuna to be found. Although not large in size they are good
fun on stand-up gear. 2000 has been the best season so far, many days
several being caught the biggest this year 220kgs.
Other species that can be caught around Phuket include:
Sailfish : year
round with July-Aug. Nov-march peak times. Up to 60 kgs.
Wahoo : (June-March)
up to 25kgs.
Tuna’s all year.
(skipjack, yellowfin, longtail, eastern little and dogtooth) mostly
schooling.
Dolphin fish : year
round best time June till March. Up to 15kgs.
King mackerel : year
round best time Jan-March. Up to 22kgs.
Giant trevally : year
round best time Nov-July when they shoal up, great popper sport. Up
to 40kgs.
Bottom fish : year round
supply but Similan islands best Oct-April.
Aboard REEL HOOKER we offer the chance to target all species of fish
whether you prefer a day charter Or
a multi-day live-aboard up to six days.
Destinations include: Racha
yai, Racha noi the drop-off
for day charters and Koh rok, Similan
islands for
multi-day live-aboard and ANDAMAN
ISLANDS. Watch out for details and catch reports.
CATCH AND RELEASE.
Aboard REEL HOOKER we have a strict billfish and shark release policy,
other than world record or other record fish. We feel it is necessary
to preserve the stocks and help with conservation.
DESTINATIONS
DAY CHARTER 9.00 am – 6.00 pm.
Good fishing can start as close as ten miles from Chalong Bay whref
the boat is kept.
The islands of Racha Yai
and Racha Noi offer some
of the best fishing to be had on a day charter. Sailfish roam the
islands and during the afternoons the action can be quite spectacular
with multiple hook-ups possible on this the most graceful and acrobatic
of all the billfish.
RACHA YAI
Without doubt over the course of a year this island produces more
sailfish strikes than any other mainly because most people head straight
thref. The islands hold a good bait population and often sailfish
can be seen with schools of small tuna attacking the balls of bait.
Free jumping sailfish are so common that sometimes it's hard to know
which way to look. Often during the Phuket International Sportfishing
Classic held each November the competitors come in after each days
fishing with stories of how many sailfish they have seen. Livebait
and belly-strips with teasers seem to be the most productive methods.
Often King Mackerel and Wahoo can be a nuisance biting the livebaits
in half.
Dolphin fish of a good size are another good sporting fish that often
take the baits intended for sails. If it's a Sailfish your after this
should be your choice destination. The island is only a one hour run
aboard REEL HOOKER which gives you more fishing time during the early
evening when the fishing is at it's best which the slower boats miss
out on.
RACHA NOI
Before reaching the island thref is a very large coral reef known
locally as Tan Kram whref on the right phase of the moon shoals of
Giant Trevally can be seen crashing bait schools. This sight gets
my adrenaline going into top gear.Casting poppers into the shoal of
often several hundred fish as big as 30 kg can be an experience you
will never forget. Once hooked on light spinning outfits these fish
are the toughest pound per pound fish that swim in the sea. Several
other pelagic species also hang around the reef including Black Marlin.
On the east side of the island is whref I have caught my biggest sailfish
65 kg during a fantastic run of large sailfish Dec 2000 and Jan-Feb
2001.No one was fishing for them thref before so they had gone untouched.
I will target them again this season.
This side of the island often produces several Wahoo during June-
Feb.
As you reach the top of the island you look out into an area that
looks like it holds fish.
Three underwater reefs provide up-swellings and currents that make
big fish feed around this area.
Several large Black Marlin have been landed href including my second
largest of 200 kgs which took 3 hours 25 mins and a tough 133 kgs
fish which took 4 hours 45 mins to land on 30 lb stand-up by Kam Ka
Ng from Singapore. (A very worthy capture).
Wahoo patrol these reefs as if they own them and during the full moon
period several fish can be caught
often of a good size. Giant Trevally shoal on these reefs and
again the action can be fantastic. Quite often sharks are seen amongst
the Trevally shoals href. For good all around action RACHA
NOI should be your choice of destination.
THE DROP OFF
Roughly 25 miles out from Phuket lies the Continental shelf. Although
not a very steep drop compared to other areas the drop off still holds
some good fish. Black Marlin hang around the shoals of tuna and can
be caught using lures or live baits.
Some nice school size yellow fin tuna up to 15 kg can also be caught
along with Wahoo, Dolphin Fish, Barracuda and even the odd Sailfish.
All DAY CHARTERS include lunch, soft drink, water, equipment and bait
SIMILAN
96 kilometres northwest of Phuket lie the Similan
Islands, a marine national park that consists of nine islands.
Generally known as one of the world’s top scuba diving destinations,
the waters surrounding these islands also
offer some of the best saltwater fishing opportunities in the world.
The Andaman Sea hosts a variety of fish that
are abundant in this area - from the smaller gamefish such as Wahoo,
Giant Trevally, Dogtooth Tuna, Tenggiri that are found within the
relatively shallow waters of the islands to the larger big game fish
of Black Marlin, Sailfish and many species of sharks that are found
in the deeper waters at the seamount, 25 kilometres west of the Similans.
Fishing techniques used are as wide in range as the fish to be caught
and as the environment in which they live.
Both Thai and European cuisines are served aboard these liveaboard
charters. Your deep sea fishing catch is the highlight of most meals
and the chef is open to suggestion on how it can be served or can
recommend and prepare a creation uniquely and deliciously flavoured
with Thai herbs and spices. Tuna can be served almost immediately
after catching as sashimi or sushi. Barbeques and fish frys are
the focus of full course meals.
While at the Similans, take the advantage of exploring the spectacular
underwater environment. Scuba diving is an option while chartering
the Andaman Hooker or the Dorado. Local licensed dive shops can
supply all the necessary equipment and a qualified PADI divemaster
will lead you on every dive while you are exploring the underwater
beauty of the area. Remember to bring along your open water diving
card if you would like to dive
Phuket Deep Sea Fishing offers liveaboard trips to the Similan Islands
during the months of November through April from two days/one night
through to six days/five nights. Suggested sleeping capacity is
four persons to a maximum of five. The Dorado will accommodate six
to eight persons.
Similan Islands trips include the following:
Fishing South of Phuket
The waters in this area host a variety of fish from Giant Trevally,
Tuna, Dorado, Barracuda, Wahoo, Blue Finned Trevally, Cobia, Narrow
Barred Mackerel (Tenggiri) to Rainbow Runners. The focus of this
charter is the catch of the larger gamefish such as Black Marlin
and specifically, sailfish. What a delight for the first time “sailfisher”
to land his or her first sailfish from the deep waters of the Andaman
Sea! This trip provides a great opportunity to try different fishing
techniques to catch the various species of fish – from drift
fishing with live and dead baits, bottom fishing and trolling with
natural baits and lures.
Local liveaboard trips offer the fishing enthusiast a greater opportunity
to explore and experience what the Andaman Sea has to offer. Although
the destinations reached are similar to those of the day trips –
the islands of Racha
Noi and Racha
Yai, Maiton, Kai and other destinations such as Phi Phi,
liveaboards reach a greater number of the hot spots that are not
accessible on a one day trip. They also offer the distinct advantage
of providing a wider range of types of fishing and thus the opportunity
to catch a greater variety of fish. Bottom fishing and night shark
fishing are also a focus on these charters, providing the deep sea
fishing angler with a unique perspective on the fish rich waters
of this area.
All meals aboard these charters are provided and chefs cater to
both Thai and Western cuisines. Your catch of the day may be cooked
to your liking or, simply ask your chef to prepare a special dish.

Liveaboard Fishing
Various species of gamefish such as Giant Trevally, Tuna, Dorado,
Barracuda, Wahoo, Blue Finned Trevally, Cobia, Narrow Barred Mackerel
(Tenggiri) and Rainbow Runners can be caught in the waters off Phuket.

of sharks are found in deeper waters. A wide range of fishing techniques

casting poppers, drift fishing with live and dead baits, bottom
fishing, trolling are just a few techniques we can use.
One of the world’s top fishing destinations, Phuket offers
tremendous opportunities to experience the thrill of big game fishing
in a tropical paradise. Sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, mountains
and vegetation provide the launch point from which the deep sea
angler can explore the many species of fish that the Andaman Sea
has to offer. Phuket enjoys all year round fishing season with the
month of November being when the variety of fish are most abundant.
Phuket Deep Sea Fishing offers day trips
to the islands of Racha

offer some tremendous opportunities for catching such species of
gamefish as Giant Trevally, Tuna, Dorado, Barracuda, Wahoo, Blue
Finned Trevally, Cobia, Narrow Barred Mackerel (Tenggiri) and Rainbow
